What is Form 1040-X?

Form 1040-X or the Amended US Individual Income Tax Return is used to:

  • Correct Form 1040, 1040-SR, 1040A, 1040EZ, 1040NR, or 1040NR-EZ;
  • Make certain elections after the prescribed deadline;
  • Change amounts previously adjusted by the IRS. However, it is not used to change any interest or penalties; they will be adjusted accordingly; or
  • Make a claim for a carryback due to a loss or unused credit.

How to Fill Out Form 1040-X?

Take note that Form 1040-X is generally used to change dollar amounts originally reported but if you are only changing information and not any dollar amounts do the following:

  1. Check the box for the calendar year or provide the other calendar or fiscal year you are amending.
  2. Provide your full legal name, current address, and Social Security Number (SSN).
  3. Complete Part I, Exemptions and Dependents, on page 2, if you are changing your exemption, or, for 2018 or later years, dependent, information that doesn’t change any dollar amounts.
  4. Check a box in Part II, if applicable, for the Presidential Election Campaign Fund.
  5. Complete Part III, Explanation of Changes.

If you and your spouse are changing from separate returns to a joint return, do the following:.

  1. Provide in column A the amounts from your return as originally filed or as previously adjusted (either by you or the IRS).
  2. To determine the amounts to provide in column B, combine the amounts from your spouse’s return as originally filed (or as previously adjusted) with any other changes you or your spouse are making. If your spouse didn’t file an original return, include your spouse’s income, deductions, credits, other taxes, etc., in the amounts you provided in column B.
  3. Read the instructions for column C to figure the amounts to provide in that column.
  4. Both of you must sign and date Form 1040-X.

Form 1040-X has 2 pages and 11 sections: calendar year or fiscal year, your personal information, amended return filing status, full-year health care coverage, income and deductions, tax liability, payments, refund or amount you owe, exemptions and dependents, presidential election campaign fund, and explanation of changes.

Calendar or Fiscal Year
Above your name, check the box for the calendar year, or provide the other calendar year or fiscal year you are amending.

Name
Provide your full legal name.

Social Security Number (SSN)
Provide your SSN.

If you are an alien and If you do not have an SSN, but you already have an ITIN, provide it instead of an SSN.

Spouse’s Name
If you and your spouse are amending a joint return, provide the name of your spouse.

Spouse’s Social Security Number (SSN)
If you and your spouse are amending a joint return, provide the SSN of your spouse.

Current Address
Provide your current address.

If you have moved since you filed your original return, provide your current address on Form 1040-X.

If you have a post office (P.O.) box, [rovide your box number only if your post office does not deliver mail to your home.

If you have a foreign address, provide the city name on the appropriate line. Do not provide any other information on that line, but also complete the spaces below that line.

Do not abbreviate the country name. Follow your country's practice for providing the postal code and the name of the province, county, or state.

Amended Return Filing Status
Check the box that corresponds to your filing status on this return. You must check one box even if you are not changing your filing status.

If you checked the box for married filing separately, provide your spouse’s name in the space provided below the filing status boxes.

If you checked the box for head of household or qualifying widow(er), provide the child’s name if the qualifying person is a child but not your dependent.

Full-Year Health Care Coverage
Check the box for “full-year health care coverage (or, for 2018 amended returns only, exempt)” to indicate that you, your spouse (if filing jointly), and anyone you can or do claim as a dependent had qualifying health care coverage or a coverage exemption that covered all of the tax year or a combination of qualifying health care coverage and coverage exemption(s) for every month of the tax year.

If you are amending a 2019 return, leave this blank.

Line 1: Adjusted gross income
Provide your adjusted gross income (AGI), which is the total of your income minus certain deductions (adjustments). Any change to the income or adjustments on the return you are amending will be reflected on this line.

If a net operating loss (NOL) carryback is included, check the box.

Provide the original amount on column A, the net change on column B, and the correct amount on column C.

Line 2: Itemized deductions or standard deduction
If you itemized your deductions, provide in column A the total from your original Schedule A (Form 1040). Provide the net change on column B, and the correct amount on column C.

If you are now itemizing your deductions instead of using the standard deduction, or have changed the amount of any deduction, or your AGI limitations have changed any deduction, attach a copy of the corrected Schedule A to this amended return.

If you are using the standard deduction, provide the amount for your filing status for the year you are amending.

Remember that the standard deduction for all years can be increased for the age and/or blindness of the taxpayer(s).

Subtract line 2 from line 1.

Line 4a: Exemptions (amended 2017 or earlier returns only)

  • You must complete Part I, Exemptions and Dependents, on page 2 of Form 1040-X if:
  • You are increasing or decreasing the number of dependents you claim,
  • You are claiming a personal exemption for you or your spouse that you didn’t previously claim, or
  • You are eliminating a personal exemption for you or your spouse that you previously claimed, but weren’t entitled to claim.

Provide the original amount on column A, the net change on column B, and the correct amount on column C.

Line 4b: Qualified business income deduction (amended 2018 or later returns only)
2019 Qualified business income deduction
If amending your 2019 return, provide on line 4b, column A, the amount from line 10 of your 2019 Form 1040 or 1040-SR.

To refigure your 2019 qualified business income deduction (that is, the amount to provide on line 4, column C), use Form 8995 or Form 8995-A as applicable. Use Form 8995, Qualified Business Income Deduction Simplified Computation, if you are amending Form 1040 (or Form 1040-SR) and:

  • You have qualified business income (loss), qualified REIT dividends, or qualified PTP income (loss),
  • Your 2019 taxable income before the qualified business income deduction is less than or equal to $160,700 ($160,725 if married filing separately or $321,400 if married filing jointly), and
  • You aren't a patron in a specified agricultural or horticultural cooperative.

Line 5: Taxable income
Provide the original amount on column A, the net change on column B, and the correct amount on column C.

Enclose a negative amount in parentheses.

Line 6: Tax
Figure the tax on your taxable income shown on line 5, column C. Generally, you will use the method(s) you used to figure the tax on your original return. However, you may need to change to a different method if, for example, you amend your return to include or change the amount of certain types of income, such as capital gains or qualified dividends.

Attach the schedule or form(s), if any, that you used to figure your revised tax. Don’t attach worksheets.

Afterward, provide the method you used to correct your tax as well as the correct amounts on columns A to C.

Line 7: Credits
Provide the original amount on column A, the net change on column B, and the correct amount on column C.

If a general business credit carryback is included, check the box.

Line 8 Subtract line 7 from line 6
If the result is zero or less, write -0-

Line 9: Health care
If you made any changes to Form 1040-X, lines 1 through 5, you may need to refigure your individual shared responsibility payment.

Provide the original amount on column A, the net change on column B, and the correct amount on column C.

Line 10: Other taxes
Provide the original amount on column A, the net change on column B, and the correct amount on column C.

Line 11: Total tax
Add lines 8, 9, and 10.

Line 12: Federal income tax withheld and excess social security and tier 1 RRTA tax withheld
If you are changing your withholding or excess SS/RRTA, attach to the front of Form 1040-X a copy of all additional or corrected Forms W-2 you received after you filed your original return. Also, attach additional or corrected Forms 1099-R that shows any federal income tax withheld.

Provide the original amount on column A, the net change on column B, and the correct amount on column C.
