Important information:

For first-time voters

If you are registering to vote in Michigan for the first time and choose to submit the Michigan Voter Registration Application form by mail, you must:

  • enter your state-issued driver’s license number or personal identification card number on the form; or
  • send one of the following identification when mailing the form to your county, city, or township clerk:
    • a copy of a current and valid photo identification document, such as a driver’s license or personal ID card, or a copy of a paycheck stub, utility bill, bank statement, or a government document that lists your name and address.

For citizens with criminal convictions

Those who are currently serving a sentence in jail or prison are not eligible to register or vote. You can register to vote if you have a past criminal conviction and are no longer in jail or prison or are in jail awaiting trial or sentencing.

Certifying your information

When you sign the Michigan Voter Registration Application form, you certify that

  • you are a United States citizen;
  • you are a Michigan resident and will vote only after you have lived in your city or township for at least 30 days;
  • you are at least 17.5 years old and will vote only after you turn 18; and
