What is Form MV-82?

Form MV-82 or the New York Vehicle Registration Form is used by New York residents to register vehicles, renew vehicle registration, and amend or request a duplicate vehicle registration.

For vehicle owners that need to apply for vehicle registration, either renewal or a new registration, Form MV-82 is required to be filled out completely and submitted.

How to fill out Form MV-82?

Before filling out Form MV-82, you must read the instructions indicated on the form. Avoid errors and be as legible as you can. Make sure that the form is completely filled out to avoid complications. Do not register false or misleading information, any false or misleading information provided on the form is punishable by law as stated in the US Code Title 8 Chapter 12 Subchapter II Part VIII and can lead to penalties and imprisonment.

Address Change

Select Yes if you have transferred to a new address. Select No if you have not transferred to a new address.

Telephone Number

Enter your telephone number. Provide the area code first.

Mobile Telephone Number

Enter your mobile telephone number. Provide the area code first.

Former Name

If you have changed your name, enter your former name and provide proof of change.

Email Address

Enter your email address if it is available.

Mailing Address

Enter your mailing address including the street number and name, rural delivery, or box number.

Residential Address

Enter your residential address if different from the mailing address.

Enter the identification number of the vehicle.

Enter the year and make of the vehicle.

Mark the box which indicates the body type of the vehicle:

Cylinders

Indicate the number of cylinders in the engine of the vehicle.

Maximum Gross weight

Enter the maximum gross weight of the vehicle if it is a trailer or a commercial vehicle. Disregard this if the vehicle is not a trailer or a commercial vehicle.

Seating capacity

Enter the seating capacity of the vehicle if it is a rental, bus, or taxi. Disregard this if the vehicle is not a rental, bus, or taxi.

Odometer reading in miles

Enter the odometer reading in miles of the vehicle.

For commercial vehicles

Enter the axles and the distance if the vehicle is for commercial use.

Changes

Describe and indicate any changes made to the vehicle, and the reasons for the changes. Submit the NYS title if it is issued.

Part 4

Additional Vehicle Information

This part contains questions that must be read and answered by the registrant.

1. Mark Yes if the vehicle has been wrecked, destroyed, or damaged and needed to be restored to its condition before the accident. Mark No if it has not been wrecked, destroyed, or damaged.
2. Mark Yes if the vehicle is registered for personal use, then proceed to question 3. Mark No if the vehicle is not for personal use. If you marked No, choose one of the boxes provided.
3. Mark Yes if the vehicle has been modified to change its registration class. Mark No if it has not been modified
4. Mark the box of your choice IF your vehicle is a pick-up truck that has a maximum unladen weight of 6,000 pounds and if the vehicle has never been used for commercial purposes.

Part 5

This part contains the certification that is required to be met for the registration to be completed.

Indicated in the certification is that the vehicle must have passed the required New York State inspection within the past 12 months, or has qualified for a time extension (VS-1077) and will be inspected within 10 days.

Also indicated in the certification is that the appropriate insurance coverage is in effect, and that the vehicle will be operated in accordance with the Vehicle and Traffic Law.

What is a VS-1077?

A VS-1077 is a 10-day extension sticker when you buy or get a vehicle from someone other than a dealer registered with the New York State DMV, you will receive an inspection extension that will last 10 days from the date of the registration.

The form is to be submitted to any DMV office in the state of New York.
