What is the Hawaii Driver’s License Renewal form?

The Hawaii Driver’s License Renewal form, named and known previously as the State of Hawaii Driver’s License Renewal form, is a document needed by license holders in order for them to renew their driver’s license before it reaches its expiration.

In compliance with the rules and regulations of Hawaii, a license holder must renew their driver’s license up to six months before its date of expiration. In Hawaii, the driver’s licenses expire at 12:00 midnight on the date of its expiry.

Who should file the Hawaii Driver’s License Renewal form?

Applicants of the HI Driver’s License Renewal form that have a temporary legal presence in the United States must renew their Hawaii instruction permit, provisional driver’s license, and driver’s license personally at the county Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office and bring with them documents to prove of continued legal presence.

Applicants of the HI Driver’s License Renewal form who reside in the United States and are citizens or immigrants that have a permanent residence status do not need to provide documents for proof again, given that they have already provided their legal name, birth date, Social Security Number (SSN), legal presence, and Hawaii principal address the first time they applied for a Hawaii Driver’s License. They are only to provide proof again if any of the above-mentioned information has been changed.

A new photograph for the driver’s license will be done personally at the DMV upon renewal, no less than every sixteen (16) years, or upon receiving the application for the driver’s license renewal prior to the sixteenth (16th) year.

It should be kept in mind that the full names on all the documents you would be bringing should all have the same name written on them. You may opt to present “connecting documents” as well to provide proof that the names or identities on the documents are valid, in case some documents have different names or identities on them.

It should also be noted that, for SSN documents, middle names and suffixes (if any) are not honored as part of the legal name and therefore could be shortened or just simply be not included.

Where should I file my Hawaii Driver’s License Renewal form?

Where to submit your HI Driver’s License Renewal form depends on which part of Hawaii you are living in, but - to complete your renewal - you must go to your local DMV office.

If you reside in Honolulu county, proceed to the Department of Customer Services.

If you reside in Hawaii and Maui counties, you should go to the Department of Finance for they are responsible for matters concerning driver’s license renewals.
